THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923)

[PROCHAINEMENT DANS L'HUMANITÉ / LIRE LE TUNNEL.] 1920.

63x47 inches, 160x119 1/4 cm. [Chachoin, Paris.]
Condition B: losses, tears, creases, darkening and flaking at edges; repaired tears at edges and in image; horizontal folds.

Bernhard Kellermann's enormously popular 1913 novel Der Tunnel was published in 1913, translated into 25 languages, and later adapted into films. The French publication was put on hold due to World War I, and eventually printed in the 1920s. It appeared in serialized form in the pages of L'Humanite. Steinlen's intimate and sensitive image shows a young boy feeding his horse in the tunnel being dug beneath the Atlantic ocean, in an attempt to connect Europe with America. This is the version before colors and text. Bargiel / Zagrodzki 71 A2.
